A roofing company director has been arrested for alleged fraudulent activity involving a roofing contract at a home in The Villages.

Melissa Skates, 52, was arrested at Safe & Sound Roofing, located at 4313 E. County Road 466 in Oxford, on Thursday.

A roofing company representative made an “unsolicited visit” on November 10 to a home in the village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter.

“During the visit to the vendor, the victim signed what the vendor told him was a non-binding contract to perform roofing work at the victim’s home,” according to the county sheriff’s office arrest report. of Sumter.

The seller had the Villager sign on an iPad. The villager showed the seller his driver’s license upon request.

One of the electronically signed documents was a blank Notice of Commencement.

“It happened in the victim’s kitchen and only he and the salesman were present according to the victim’s sworn statement,” the arresting officer wrote in the report.

Skates, who is a solicitor and office manager for the roofing company, was not present during the meeting, according to the report.

She allegedly notarized the document on December 3 when the victim was not physically in her presence.

His notary commission is valid until June 26, the report says.

She is charged with a county felony of fraud.

Skates was taken into custody and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $2,000 bond.
