Great Western Railway’s human resources manager has won a prestigious award.
Ruth Busby has been named Human Resources Manager of the Year at the Personnel Today Awards.
Ruth was praised by the judges for the way the South Devon rail operator’s human resources department helped her colleagues through the Covid-19 pandemic.
She was chosen from a shortlist of seven nominees and received her award from Personnel Today editorial director Rob Moss and comedian Russell Kane in a scintillating awards ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel at a ceremony held before Christmas.
The judges’ summary read: “”Ruth joined GWR in 2018. Within a year, the pandemic hit and the train operator faced a workforce fearful of the future of the railways. Ruth ensured that HR truly partnered with the business.
“GWR has increased senior management communications and visibility, providing regular guidance to line managers and engaging with unions to ensure colleagues feel heard. Our judges were impressed with the nimble and responsive use of communications and the fact that GWR did not fire any staff.
Ruth said: “It was incredibly humbling that my fabulous team took the time to name me HR Director of the Year. It’s even more incredible to have won this award.
“None of this would have happened without such a fantastic, passionate, creative, innovative and, above all, supportive team. I am incredibly proud to work with them and all my colleagues at GWR.
GWR Managing Director Mark Hopwood said the award was well deserved: “It’s a fantastic achievement. Railway workers who win national awards against competition from other industries are great. went on to help the railroad do better while inspiring his team.
